Regulators seeking to crack down on illegal businesses

Last updated 1 year ago

Bohosh noted the ongoing challenges facing Slovak regulators with illegal online operators. But he stressed that statistics show the fight against illegal gambling has been "effective," especially on technical devices such as quiz machines at bars and other hospitality venues.

The fight against illegal operators also leads online, where regulators are actively looking for online black market operators, including loot boxes of computer games. Regulators have the power to impose sanctions on illegal operators' advertising.

The city of Boho described the risks of certain municipalities seeking to ban gambling, saying such restrictive measures could drive players to potentially harmful black markets.

"I would like to make this topic the subject of a wider social discussion, because if you feel that gambling is being dealt with by banning it in metropolitan areas, yes, legal gambling is being dealt with, but the risk of illegal gambling will still be high."

In May 2023, regulators announced they had conducted 2,511 inspections during the first quarter, 201 more than the same quarter in 2022. Digital inspections were up 90% compared to the first quarter of 2022.
